Senior Electric Utility Underground Inspector


CNC Engineering manages the Industry Public Utilities Commission (IPUC) for the City of Industry which is a municipal electric system serving portions of business and residential properties within the city. It was established in 2001 and serves 100+ customers and will soon own and maintain all the street lights within the City of Industry (approximately 2500 lights). In addition they operate and maintain the Industry Metrolink PV-1 Solar facility with the plan to add more solar facilities.
CNC Engineering is looking to hire a part time Senior Electric Utility Underground Inspector. Hours will vary from 5-25 hours per week. This position will be with CNC Engineering who is working under contract with the IPUC. The successful candidate will report to the Operations Manager and the IPUC Engineer.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Performing on-site inspections of substructure installations
  • Verifying compliance with IPUC standards, applicable construction requirements, industry standards, local governing agency standards, California General Orders, and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
  • Measuring and recording the location of IPUC facilities, accounting for deviations, creating as-built drawings and communicating status of construction and inspection activities as required
  • Performing qualified electrical worker (QEW) stand by as needed
  • Utilizing database systems to access and input information
  • Recognizing dangerous conditions and working in a safe manner
  • Driving frequently throughout the City of Industry
  • Performing other underground inspection duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Working with operation and maintenance contractors responding to urgent repairs and installations
  • Perform utility locating services in coordination with Digalert
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Fifteen or more years’ of experience working on, working with, or inspecting electric utility underground infrastructure
  • Must have a valid U.S. Driver’s License
Desired Qualifications:
  • Typically possesses five or more years performing surveillance and inspections
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills including experience with Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with utility underground construction practices, specifications and requirements, including knowledge of state of California general orders for electric utilities, knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), and related industry standards
  • Experience reading and understanding work order drawings, surveys and utility substructure maps
  • Experience managing multiple tasks with conflicting schedules and limited time lines
  • Experience drawing as-built maps
  • Experience giving functional direction to contractor and support personnel
  • Ability to accurately analyze information and make sound decisions
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact and collaborate with internal and external personnel
  • Demonstrate strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning
  • Project Management experience
  • 5 years of experience in utility line work
  • Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW)
